Villa Cornaggia

Built in 1480, possibly to a design by Domenico Veneziano, Palazzo Cornaggia is a Venetian Gothic–style residence, commissioned by the noble Thiene family.

The façade is characterized on the ground floor by three imposing Gothic arches, while the piano nobile is embellished with single-lancet windows and a delicate three-light window. Particularly elegant is the painted frieze between the attic windows, where decorative elements alternate with noble coats of arms.

Beside the villa stands the oratory dedicated to St. Jerome and later to St. Gaetano Thiene, built in 1472 by Count Giacomo Thiene.
In 1870, the Villa and the Oratory were sold by the Thiene family to Countess Elisa Cornaggia Colleoni, and later passed to the Mangilli family. During this period, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the lateral wings in Neo-Gothic style were added.

In 1971, the palace became municipal property and, after careful restoration, was converted into the Civic Library.

Collections

Permanent archaeological exhibition featuring finds spanning a broad time frame, from Prehistory, through the Bronze and Iron Ages, up to the Roman period.
