The Thiene Castle is an extraordinary example of a pre-Palladian Villa; unique in its genre, it is considered a milestone in the evolution of Venetian Villas.
It combines the features of a castle with the characteristics of Venetian palaces, in particular the so-called casa fondaco which was, at the same time, a house, warehouse and trading facility. The Thiene Castle, attributed to the architect Domenico da Venezia, was built during the 15th century on behalf of the illustrious Porto family from Vicenza.
Its halls still host the original furniture, as well as clothing, accessories and a large collection of portraits. Another prominent feature is the cycle of frescoes by Gian Battista Zelotti and Gian Antonio Fasolo.
It is then possible to admire the magnificent stables, designed by the architect Francesco Muttoni and built between the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a small monumental complex comprised of a church dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Castle, which is the symbol of Thiene, is located in the historic center and surrounded by a 12,000 sq. m. park. The historical gardens include: the century-old magnolias of the “noble courtyard”, the citrus-tree pergola in the park, the renaissance grotto, and the 16th-century ice house.

The Castello di Thiene is an extraordinary example of a pre-Palladian villa, built in the mid-15th century by the Porto family, one of the most prominent noble families of Vicenza.
Unlike medieval defensive castles, it was conceived as a country noble residence, characterized by Gothic-Renaissance architectural elements and a large inner courtyard. This space was designed to serve as the headquarters of the agricultural estate, with barchesse (farm wings), granaries, and areas dedicated to the administration of the land.
Inside the castle, rooms from different historical periods are preserved, enriched with furnishings, paintings, and decorative elements, as well as an important historical archive that documents the long history of the estate.
The Castello di Thiene was commissioned by the noble Porto family. In 1816, it passed by inheritance to the Colleoni Porto family and later to the Thiene family.
It is one of the few noble residences that has never been sold: even today it still belongs to the descendants of the families who have owned and lived in it over the centuries, remaining within the same family lineage.
